September 2008

Dear Friends:

Meet Bridget, Basenji-Terrier mix! She is a small to medium size bundle of energy, about one year old. Bridget was tied up to the back door of a lady who helps to rescue animals- and Bridget found her way to us. She loves to play with Molly, our Schnauzer mix, so chances are she gets along with other dogs too. Anyone who is interested in this little girl, please contact us!

We had a couple of hours of sunshine while we were there at the Shelter: Viola McDonald and her friend Maria came to visit, but were only able to stay an hour. A lady who is involved with Dogs Deserve Better came with a carload full of food for our animals. While she was there she decided to clean the food storage building. Thank you Susanne! She was quite impressed by our shelter, which she calls a “sanctuary”, not a shelter. She promised to collect more food, toys and other things we need. She will also try to find us a volunteer or two, to walk the dogs.

More good news came our way in the form of a $450.00 check made out to Main Gas, our heat-supplier. Cindy Houston had her yearly yard sale to raise some much needed money for Charley’s Strays. Cindy and her husband Steve, Jackie Lowney and friend Joan did the selling. A big THANK YOU to all for helping to keep our animals warm next winter. Cindy said to me on the phone; ". . . this should buy 100 gallons of heating fuel."

Let’s hope the powers who are, will not raise the prices even more. After all, there could be another hurricane in the future, and one has to be prepared for the possibility of losing a drilling-platform, so they may as well raise the prices BEFORE this may, or may not, happen.

Sylvia Fiorino and Dottie Ferris took a load full of wonderful baskets, jewelry and cat toys along with some other items to the Pet Rock Festival in Massachusetts. There were lots of other animal organizations who sold things. By the time potential buyers had made their way to the last corner where Sylvia and Dottie were located, the buyers had no money left. So a very disappointed Dottie and Sylvia sent us a check for $297.00. They had hoped to make much more for the Shelter. Thanks to Sylvia and Dottie, and many thanks to Jackie Lowney, who made the beautiful baskets, the big seller at the Pet Rock Festival.

Kim Distasio, a local lady, did lots of sewing, the results was a huge box full of beautiful cat toys, stuffed with organically grown catnip from Cathy O’Connor’s backyard. Thank you very much, Kim and Cathy.  I have some items left for the fundraiser on October, 18th, in Woburn, Massachusetts.

We received a donation from Judy and Al Smith in memory of their little sweetheart, dog Oliver. Sandra Nicholson mailed us a check in memory of her sister-in-law’s friend and companion, dog Alex. Lorena and Harry Clark also sent us a check in memory of Alex. Thank you very much, I know what it’s like to lose your best friend – time heals, but it seems to me like it takes a whole life time to do that.

Also for lack of space I can’t write much about the upcoming fundraiser, other than: Please come visit us on October 18, 2008, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Woburn, Massachusetts. Directions are on the  tickets.

A reminder to our Massachusetts friends and supporters: Please vote YES on question # 3 that will be on the ballot on November. 4, 2008! Thank you!

Mars Petcare US Announces Nationwide Voluntary Recall

Franklin, Tennessee (September 12, 2008 ) Today, Mars Petcare US announced a voluntary recall of products manufactured at its Everson, Pennsylvania facility. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund. This voluntary recall only affects the United States.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. For more information please click here: www.petcare.mars.com

Have a great month of October: We hope to see lots and lots of you at the fundraiser.

Gabriele, Mary, Karen, Ted and Jim
